Iran focused on small reactors: Salehi

TEHRAN, Sep. 16 (MNA) – The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization told the Sputnik, the Russian news outlet, that developing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) is the current nuclear strategy of Iran.

“Currently Iran is mulling over potential nuclear partners, beside Russia, to develop nuclear cooperation on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs),” said Ali Akbar Salehi, the Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) on Friday in an interview with Sputnik, the Russian news agency.

Salehi underlined that Iran has not got into talks with foreigners on SMRs but the nuclear strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to develop SMRs. “Whether it is feasible in Iran, accordingly, is under examination,” he maintained, “Certainly we will share the table after the decision is made and willing countries have come forward for cooperation with us.”

He clarified that SMRs are prefabricated small power units that suit remote areas with no access to water or space and small network of electricity.
